How to have a German conversation without knowing German?

In German, there are a few ways to respond to German conversations, without knowing German. This has gotten me quite far when strangers talk to me and expect me to know what they are talking about. These small phrases continue the conversation, and make it sound like you know what is going on ;)

Genau - (English) Correct, right, absolutely!

Stimmt - (English) Agreed, true that!

Ach so - (English) Oh I see! Aha!

I saw a Ted Talk about, not asking someone where they are from, but where they are local. As someone who lives abroad I can relate to this, because when I’m in Canada and people ask me where I’m from, I don’t even know how to answer

My 14th day of self-isolation is today and I can’t believe it is already over. The first week felt slow, but the second week after getting into a rhythm flew by.
